A fire suspected to have been started by welding works at Pemba Secretary School in Southern Province has destroyed mattresses, days before schools are scheduled to reopen.
Reports have indicated that some workers were assembling beds inside the facility in readiness for the school opening when the fire broke out on Thursday, 3rd September 2026.
Hundreds of mattresses have reportedly been destroyed while the value of other properties destroyed remains unknown.
It is, however, not clear whether the school will reopen as planned on Monday, 7th September 2026.
Police are yet to issue an official statement on the matter
