A 25-year-old man has been shot dead in Solwezi District, while one of the suspected attackers is admitted to hospital under police guard after being apprehended and assaulted by members of the public.
In a statement, Zambia Police Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi says the incident occurred on Friday afternoon in Kandemba Compound, Kimiteto Area, where the victim, identified as Sarkodie Chibuye, was allegedly shot in the upper chest following an argument with two men who had accompanied him to his residence.
Mr. Chilabi says neighbours who heard the gunshot rushed to the scene and found Chibuye lying on the ground before he was taken to Solwezi General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
He says the two suspects fled immediately after the shooting, but members of the public pursued them and managed to apprehend one suspect, identified as Kayombo, while the second suspect escaped and remains at large.
Mr. Chilabi says the apprehended suspect was assaulted by members of the public, sustaining serious injuries, and is currently admitted to Solwezi General Hospital under police guard.
He adds that a loaded Taurus pistol was recovered from the suspect and has since been taken into police custody as investigations continue.
Mr. Chilabi says the suspect is expected to be charged with murder once his medical condition improves and investigations are concluded.
