Police in Lusaka have detained a 30-year-old man in connection with the alleged murder of a five-year-old boy in George Compound, Matero.
According to police public relations officer Godfrey Chilabi, the incident occurred on July 6, 2026, around 20:00 hours and was reported to Matero Police Station shortly after midnight on July 7.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect allegedly strangled the child, resulting in fatal injuries to the neck.
Police say a neighbour heard people calling for help and, upon checking outside, allegedly found the suspect strangling the child.
Members of the public are said to have intervened, restrained the suspect, and rushed the child to George Clinic, where he was pronounced dead.
The child’s body has since been deposited at the University Teaching Hospital Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
The suspect remains in police custody, while investigations continue. Police say the motive behind the alleged offence has not yet been established.
