KAZUNGULA LEARNERS RISK THEIR LIVES CROSSING REPTILE-INFESTED STREAM TO ATTEND SCHOOL

.

Learners at Government Republic of Zambia (GRZ) Primary School in Kazungula District, Southern Zambia are being forced to wade through the reptile-infested Lwiizi Stream every day due to the absence of a safe crossing point.

Although no learner has recently lost their life while crossing the stream, parents and guardians remain deeply concerned about the safety of their children, especially during periods of high water levels.

Concerned community members have questioned why authorities have not constructed a crossing point despite being aware of the challenge for many years.

School authorities say the situation worsens during the rainy season, when rising water levels lead to increased absenteeism as many learners stay away from school for fear of crossing the dangerous stream.

In an effort to mitigate the risk, members of the community have introduced a temporary solution by contributing K5 each to pay an elderly man who assists children in crossing the stream safely.

The community is now appealing to the government and other stakeholders to urgently construct a proper crossing point to ensure learners can access education without risking their lives.
