Keir Starmer resigns, with Andy Burnham confirming he will stand to replace him as Labour leader and prime minister.
In a statement outside 10 Downing Street, the PM says he accepts with “good grace” that his party no longer believes he’s the right person “to lead us into the next general election.”
Visibly emotional, Starmer thanks his “fantastic wife, Vic” and says he wants to be the “best dad I can to my beautiful children” – watch the speech in full.
What happens now? Starmer says he’ll remain as PM until Labour chooses a new leader, which will happen by the time “Parliament returns in September” or sooner if the party gets behind one candidate and there’s no leadership contest.
