FOUR SUSPECTS ARRESTED OVER CHAWAMA POLITICAL VIOLENCE

Four suspects wanted in connection with the political violence that erupted in Chawama’s John Howard area on June 5th have been arrested by police in Chipata.

This arrest brings the total number to nine suspects arrested in connection to the Chawama political violence incident.

According to a statement issued by Zambia Police Service Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi, the suspects have been identified as Ricky Chambawilo, 43, Thomas Mvula, 41, Peter Mwaba, 42, and Rickson Phiri, 46, all residents of Lusaka.

Mr. Chilabi says the four men had been on the police wanted list following the violent incidents that occurred in Chawama and are being investigated for offences including aggravated robbery, malicious damage to property, assault and unlawful wounding.

He explains that preliminary investigations indicate the suspects were part of a group involved in the political violence that rocked the area.

The suspects were apprehended on June 9th at Protea Hotel in Chipata, where they were among a group of individuals gathered outside the hotel.

Police have since placed the four suspects in custody as they await formal charges.
