Police in Chinsali say a six year old boy has died after being hit by a car at Chandamali Market on Wednesday evening.
Muchinga Police Commissioner Kenneth Kang’ombe said the accident happened around 5pm along the Kabuta Chandamali road.
He said a Toyota Allion, driven by 21 year old Cosmas Chansa Mutale of Mayard Compound, lost control due to excessive speed and struck the child as he crossed the road.
The boy, Phillimon Kangwa of Chandamali Compound, sustained internal injuries and a fractured right leg. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Chinsali District Hospital.
His body has been deposited in the hospital mortuary awaiting a postmortem.
Mr Mutale who escaped unhurt is in police custody and will be charged while the vehicle has been impounded.
The commissioner has since appealed to motorists to observe speed limits, especially in busy market areas.
