The Zambia Police Service has recorded two separate murder cases involving children in Nchelenge and Chibombo Districts.
In Nchelenge, police have detained a couple in connection with the suspected murder of a one-year-old boy, Justine Mwansa.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the child’s mother, Doreen Mpundu, 24, married John Chishimba, 40, in 2025.
Police say the child, from the mother’s previous relationship, was allegedly not accepted by the stepfather.
It is alleged that on the night of February 20, 2026, the child was assaulted and later died after losing consciousness.
Police further say the couple buried the body in a bushy area without reporting the incident and later relocated to another village.
The matter came to light on May 4, after the mother reported a domestic dispute to a headman and later disclosed the alleged murder.
Community Crime Prevention Unit members apprehended the couple and handed them over to police.
Officers later recovered the child’s body in a decomposed state.
The suspects remain in custody, while investigations continue. A post-mortem examination is yet to be conducted.
Meanwhile, in Chibombo, police are investigating the murder of a five-year-old girl who went missing after being sent on an errand and was later found dead in nearby bushes.
Police say investigations are ongoing and have appealed to the public for information in the Chibombo case.
