FUEL EMERGENCY TO EASE BUSINESS PRESSURE – MWAMBAZI

.

A Lusaka-based business executive, David Mwambazi, says the government’s decision to declare the fuel supply situation an emergency will help ease pressure on businesses and households.

In an interview with Diamond News, Mwambazi said fuel is a key driver of the economy, and any intervention in the sector has a direct impact on the cost of living and doing business.

He, however, urged the government to consider introducing subsidies as a temporary measure to further stabilise the sector.

On Tuesday, March 31, 2026, the Zambian Government approved the zero-rating of Value Added Tax (VAT) and the suspension of excise duty on petrol and diesel imports.

The measures will take effect from April 1, 2026, and will run for three months.

The continued conflict in the Middle East has disrupted global oil supply chains, leading to increased international fuel prices and exerting upward pressure on domestic pump prices.
