About 13 cattle have died after being struck by lightning in Sicheelo Village in Chief Simwatachela’s chiefdom in Zimba District, Southern Province.
According to police in Southern Province, the incident was reported at Choma Central Police Station on 9 March 2026.
Southern Province Police Commissioner Moono Namalongo said Chrispine Ndeleki, 47, of Sicheelo Village in Chief Simwatachela’s chiefdom in Zimba District, reported that thirteen (13) heads of cattle of assorted colours, branded 2T2B, died after being struck by lightning during heavy rainfall.
Mr. Namalongo said the incident occurred when the owner of the animals instructed his son to take thirty-seven (37) heads of cattle for dipping. After dipping them, the boy later took the cattle for grazing within the village.
Later the same day, around 13:00 hours, it started raining heavily, and the boy decided to return the animals home. However, before reaching home, lightning struck the herd, killing thirteen (13) of the cattle.
The matter was reported to the village headman, who advised the owner to report the incident to Choma Police Station for police clearance.
Police have confirmed that the Veterinary Department and health inspectors were subsequently engaged, and the carcasses are currently being kept at an abattoir pending clearance.
