Zambia’s Attorney General, Mulilo Kabesha, has disclosed that negotiations regarding the burial site of former President Edgar Lungu are still ongoing.
Kabesha said although he is not part of the negotiation team, he is aware that discussions between the parties remain active.
He was responding to a question on whether there is still room for negotiations amid the ongoing appeal process.
Kabesha stated that it is the government’s desire for the matter to be settled out of court and amicably, resulting in a consent judgment that would lead to a win-win situation.
He further disclosed that the Zambian government has not yet received the grounds of appeal from the Lungu family.
Recently, the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa granted the Lungu family permission to appeal the decision of the Pretoria High Court, which ordered the repatriation of Lungu’s body to Zambia for a state funeral presided over by President Hakainde Hichilema.
The Lungu family says the decision does not respect the wishes of Lungu and his family.
Lungu died on June 5, 2025.
