NEWBORN BABY STOLEN FROM KAFUE GENERAL HOSPITAL

.

Police in Kafue have launched an investigation into a suspected case of child stealing after a one-day-old baby boy went missing from Kafue General Hospital.

Zambia Police Service Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi,Kafue has reported that Kafue Police Station received the report around 11:00 hours on Saturday from hospital staff acting on behalf of the child’s mother, Ms. Lineta Mweetwa of Kafue.

Ms. Mweetwa reported that her newborn son had gone missing while under observation in the hospital’s Neonatal Unit.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Ms. Mweetwa delivered the baby at Nangongwe Maternity Clinic around 05:00 hours on February 20, 2026.

The infant was later referred to Kafue General Hospital the same day and admitted to the Neonatal Unit for specialised care.

The mother remained admitted in the postnatal ward and is reported to have visited her baby between 17:00 hours on February 20 and 02:00 hours on February 21.

The disappearance was discovered around 05:00 hours on February 21, when a nurse on duty in the Neonatal Unit noticed that the baby was missing and alerted hospital management.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers found the baby’s cot with cannulas and an oxygen pipe still in place. However, both the infant and the baby blanket were missing.

Police detectives have since instituted intensive investigations aimed at establishing the circumstances surrounding the incident, recovering the infant, and bringing the suspected perpetrators to justice.

The Zambia Police Service has appealed to members of the public with any information that may assist in the investigation to report to the nearest police station. Authorities say updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
