MOPANI SUSPENDS MINING OVER DEADLY MINING ACCIDENT

.

Mopani Copper Mines PLC has with immediate effect suspended all underground mining operations being conducted by Reliant Mining in Kitwe and Mufulira following two fatal underground mining accidents recorded in less than three weeks.

The latest accident occurred on January 31, 2026, prompting the mining firm to halt the contractor’s operations pending full investigations.

In a statement Mopani Copper Mines Public Relations Manager Dr. Nebert Mulenga says the suspension will remain in force until Reliant Mining submits a comprehensive safety improvement plan and Mopani approves corrective and preventive measures to address safety gaps.

Dr. Mulenga further says operations will only resume after Mopani is satisfied with the proposed safety improvements and has verified readiness to implement them.

He further says Mopani Executive Management, led by Chief Executive Officer Eng. Charles Sakanya, has commenced mass safety meetings with underground employees to reinforce compliance with critical safety rules and accountability at all levels.
