MULUNGUSHI TEXTILES STARTS TEST RUNS

.

The Zambia–China Mulungushi Textile (ZCMT) has commenced test runs at the Mulungushi Textiles plant in Kabwe, marking a major milestone toward reviving Zambia’s textile industry ahead of its official commissioning by President Hakainde Hichilema later this year.

Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry Principal Public Relations Officer Everness Nankala says the development follows a US$140 million investment in rehabilitation works, installation of modern machinery, and the establishment of cotton out-grower schemes to strengthen the textile value chain.

Ms. Nankala adds that once fully operational, the plant is expected to create over 500 direct jobs and significantly reduce Zambia’s reliance on imported textiles.

Mulungushi Textiles is a joint venture between Zambia and China aimed at restoring the country’s once vibrant textile sector and boosting industrial growth.

The historic Kabwe factory is currently undergoing major upgrades to modernise production and resume operations.
