President Hakainde Hichilema has congratulated Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) candidate Bright Nundwe on his victory in the Chawama Constituency parliamentary by-election.
According to Chief Government Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa, the United Party for National Development (UPND) has accepted the decision of the people of Chawama to vote for Mr. Nundwe.
He said President Hichilema has commended voters for turning out in large numbers to peacefully exercise their democratic right.
Mr. Mweetwa, who was speaking from Choma, said the government expects Mr. Nundwe to work with President Hichilema in advancing national development for the benefit of the people of Chawama and the country at large.
He stressed that development programmes in Chawama will continue, adding that the constituency will receive its rightful share of government support, regardless of the political party in leadership.
Mr. Mweetwa noted that the Chawama by-election was conducted without violence, describing it as a strong signal of Zambia’s growing democratic maturity.
He said the Chawama poll is likely to be among the last parliamentary by-elections ahead of the dissolution of Parliament, with about four months remaining before the House is dissolved.
Mr Mweetwa added that the peaceful conduct of the election sends a positive signal ahead of the 2026 General Elections, expressing confidence that the polls will be conducted peacefully under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema.
