Five people have died in Ncheenje Village of Dundumwezi Constituency in Chief Chikanta’s Chiefdom, Kalomo District in Southern Province after consuming chijabbo (also known as chijabi), an illicit locally brewed beverage reportedly made using methylated spirit, sweeteners, shoe polish, and other dangerous substances.
Four of the victims are believed to be related.
Family spokesperson Cecilia Bbenkele confirmed the deaths and revealed the identities of the four deceased family members.
Several others are currently admitted to Request Muntanga Level One Hospital.
Health authorities in Kalomo District and the police are yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
The tragedy comes barely two weeks after six men in Zimba District under Chief Simwatachela died after consuming the same illicit drink, commonly referred to as kankilamu.
