The Zambia Men’s Hockey Team has been handed a 5–0 forfeit defeat to South Africa after arriving late for their opening match, which was scheduled for Saturday, October 11.
The setback follows financial challenges that delayed the team’s travel due to an outstanding K500,000 required for accommodation before government could process their travel tickets.
Initially expected to depart on Thursday, October 9, the team only left on Saturday at 13:30 hours aboard Ethiopian Airways, the kickoff time for their first game.
Government covered half of the accommodation cost, with the National Olympic Committee of Zambia also stepping in with a K50,000 contribution.
Zambia will now shift focus to their next encounter against Ghana on Sunday, October 12, at midday.
