56-YEAR-OLD GRANDMOTHER FOUND GUILTY OF ASSAULTING GRANDSON

.

The Lusaka Magistrates’ Court has sentenced a 56-Year-old woman Fannie Longwe to five years’ simple imprisonment for assaulting her Seven-Year-Old grandson, causing him actual bodily harm.

Resident Magistrate Mutinta Mwenya found Longwe guilty of assault on a child after she admitted beating the child with a cooking stick on 4th November 2024 at her Libala South residence in Lusaka.

The court heard that the child, who had been under his grandmother’s care for several years, sustained bruises on his back, face, arms, legs, and stomach.

The injuries were discovered by his Grade One teacher after the school’s garden boy brought him to class.

In her ruling, Magistrate Mwenya said that while disciplining children is acceptable in Zambian society, the force used by Longwe was unlawful and went beyond reasonable chastisement.
