Government has recruited 3,205 health workers into the Civil Service following a series of promotions, transfers and retirements.
Speaking during a briefing, Civil Service Commission Chairperson Choolwe Beyani says 2,214 recruitments are as a result of promotions and transfers while 1,000 are as a result of appointments arising from natural attrition, including retirements, resignations, unpaid leave and deaths, among others.
Mr. Beyani says the 3,205 health workers comprise 240 medical doctors, 997 nurses, 194 midwifery nurses, 390 clinical officers, 138 environmental health workers, 140 laboratory staff, 138 pharmacists, one medical physicist and 495 general workers, among others.
He adds that the recruited health workers include 10 percent of persons with disabilities and Cholera volunteers, adding that all candidates have been recruited following their applications in the 2023 recruitment exercise.
Mr. Beyani adds that names of successful candidates will be published tomorrow in the Zambia Daily Mail newspaper and that they are expected to report to their designated stations on 1st June 2026.
He further says government does not have enough capacity to recruit all health workers on the database due to limited funds, acknowledging the shortage of health workers.
