Three people have died, and one has gone blind in Siachitema Chiefdom, Kalomo District, after consuming a home-made alcoholic brew reportedly mixed with harmful chemicals.
Kalomo District Health Director, Dr. Misheck Mukanzu, has confirmed the deaths to Diamond News, saying two victims died a day after drinking the concoction, while a third died later at Kalomo General Hospital.
Dr. Mukanzu said four others remain admitted to Kalomo General Hospital, with one patient having lost their sight, but the rest are responding well to treatment.
A relative of one of the deceased told Diamond News that the brew contained shoe polish, methylated spirit, sweetener, tyre mending solution, and fertilizer.
