.

Twelve suspects have been formally charged with the murder of Hellen Kamutumbe, who died after being subjected to mob justice in Kisasa area of Kalumbila District over allegations that she had made a man’s private parts disappear.

Zambia Police Service Public Relations Officer, Godfrey Chilabi, has confirmed that the individuals charged with murder are among those who were earlier apprehended by law enforcement officers.

Mr. Chilabi had further disclosed that 22 other suspects have been charged with riotous behaviour, while 25 people have since been released after investigations found no case against them.

He added that 257 suspects are currently in police custody as investigations into the matter continue.

Speaking to Diamond Media, Mr. Chilabi says the screening process has not yet been concluded, as police are still working to establish the level of involvement of each suspect.

He assured the public that the police remain committed to ensuring that all those involved are thoroughly investigated and that justice is served.

Meanwhile, families of the arrested suspects have appealed to the police to expedite the investigation process.

Some relatives expressed concern that it has now been seven days since their family members were taken into custody without clear updates on the progress of the case.

The families have since called on the police to ensure transparency and timely communication, saying the prolonged uncertainty is causing emotional and financial distress.

The case has continued to draw public attention, as investigations remain ongoing into the death of Hellen Kamutumbe, whose killing has left the Kisasa community shaken.
