Police in Northern Province has confirmed the tragic accident on Lake Bangweulu involving 41 Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) members, that were enroute from Chilubi to neighbouring Chishi Island of Chifunabuli District in Luapula Province around 15:00 hours on Friday.
Northern Province Commanding Officer Gloria Cheelo Mulele says tragedy struck about three nautical miles (5 kilometers) from their destination due to high waves, that caused the Coxswain to lose control of the Super-Engine propelled boat and capsized.
Ms. Mulele adds that out of the 41 on-board, 28 were rescued but 12 are still missing while bodies of a child and a male adult have been retrieved.
She adds that an hour after the accident, the matter was reported to police by Bright Buunda, an elder of the SDA.
As a search for missing victims is underway, social commentators have echoed concerns on unending challenges faced by communities that depend on unsafe maritime services.
